South Downs Flint blocks get the Royal seal of approval from HRH the Prince of Wales – March 2012
When approached by Chichester College to provide flint blocks for their garden at the Ideal Home Show 2012, we were delighted. Flint blocks are being used more and more in modern building to ensure buildings fit with their local surroundings, and this was the ideal platform to raise their profile even more. Their garden used natural sustainable materials to demonstrate “Harmony with Nature” making flint blocks an ideal building material.
The show ran from 16 March – 01 April, and included a number of celebrity visitors and speakers. Alongside Chichester College there were 5 other colleges who entered the competition to win “Young Gardener of the Year.” So imagine how excited we were to hear that Chichester College designed the winning garden taking Gold and Best in Show. What’s more, the award was presented by none other than HRH the Prince of Wales. We’ll be contacting him shortly to see if he needs any blocks for Buckingham Palace!

Rip offs, scams, cowboy tradesmen – consumers are right to be wary when buying goods or services. Thanks to an initiative by Trading Standards, the answer is to ‘Buy With Confidence’. South Downs Flint works with architect to achieve conservation consent – 17 September 2010
South Downs Flint was approached by Deacon and Richardson Architects, a Sussex based company to quote for a flint house in Rottingdean, Sussex. The house was to be built adjacent to a conservation area and adjacent to a Grade II listed house. It was important to achieve a look that complemented the local area, and the flint blocks were to be approved by the local conservation officer before the build could start.
After an initial meeting, David Lockyer, Proprietor of South downs Flint visited the site and created a test panel, according to the specification dictated by the architect and client. “It is important to understand what the client wants, and by producing an initial panel it opens up discussion to achieve the desired end result.” The panel was created using a premium knapped block and left for the Conservation Officer’s approval.
After the visit from the Conservation Officer, there was further feedback and some alterations were required to the blocks before consent would be given. Therefore a custom block was produced and pointed as set out by the conservation officer, which was approved and the build commenced in October 2010. “We are really pleased with the service offered by South Downs Flint, without which it would have been much harder for us to receive planning consent from the council” says Alan Deacon, RIBA, Partner of Deacon and Richardson Architects www.deaconandrichardson.co.uk
It pays to drink in the Royal Oak – 01 September 2010
After a hard day onsite, Partners of South Downs Flint David Lockyer and David Willoughby decided to refresh themselves in the Royal Oak Poynings ( www.royaloakpoynings.biz ) before heading home. Whilst at the bar discussing their next big projects, they got chatting to Owner Paul Day, who happened to be obtaining quotes for a flint wall in his garden. After an initial inspection of the site, South Downs Flint produced a quote for supply and fit of their mixed flint block. “The cost including laying was much cheaper than the traditional method of laying flint” says Paul Day “and you couldn’t tell from the finished result that flint blocks have been used.”
